Rumor: not 100% verified. This story comes from leakers and retailer listings. Nvidia has not confirmed it, and one report says Nvidia denies it. Treat it as unconfirmed until Nvidia says more.
Leakers claim Nvidia has stopped sending new GB202 chips to the GeForce RTX 5090 and is keeping them for its professional RTX Pro workstation cards. If true, that would explain why the RTX 5090 has become so hard to find.
The reports appeared around October 10, 2026. On October 15, Club386 reported that many RTX 5090 listings at Micro Center show "NOT CARRIED", while other stores list the card as temporarily out of stock.
What the rumor says
- Nvidia no longer allocates new GB202 dies to the RTX 5090. Future GB202 output goes to RTX Pro cards (leakers MEGAsizeGPU, hongxing2020 and Jukan, via VideoCardz).
- One leaker claims a factory notice says production of all RTX 5090 models will stop, including the China-only D versions.
- Cards already built from existing stock could still be sold.
Why it would make sense
GB202 is the same chip used in the RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell workstation card, which sells for several times the price of a gaming card. Nvidia's launch price for the RTX 5090 was $1,999. Moving scarce chips to the more expensive product would earn Nvidia more per chip.
What Nvidia says
- Club386 (October 15): Nvidia had not replied to requests for comment.
- GameGPU reports that Nvidia denied the reports and said RTX 5090 production continues as usual, blaming missing models on high demand. We could not find Nvidia's own statement.
Not verified
These claims are circulating but we found no reliable source for them:
- RTX 5090 prices in China rising from 35,000 to 54,000 yuan in six weeks.
- Prices in Europe above 5,000 euros last month. Club386 does report some cards going above $5,090.
- The RTX 5080 becoming the 24 GB flagship. The RTX 5080 on sale today uses the GB203 chip with 16 GB of GDDR7, not 24 GB.
