Prime Intellect, the open AI training and inference platform, acquired Moondream, the maker of small open vision-language models. Founders Vik Korrapati and Jay Allen join Prime Intellect to lead and scale inference and to work on multimodal models, including vision and computer use.
The deal brings Photon, Moondream's inference engine, which compiles each model into a single GPU program with its own custom kernels. Prime Intellect announced the acquisition on October 13, 2026.
What it is
- Speed. On a single NVIDIA H100, Photon runs more than 60 Moondream inferences per second, fast enough for live video, with answers in tens of milliseconds.
- Moondream 3.1. Prime says it leads on object detection, aerial images, charts and crowded scenes like store shelves, at 34 requests per second.
- Already shipping. Moondream 3.1 is available through Prime Inference, powered by Photon. Photon and Moondream's kernel work are being built into Prime's stack.
- The brand stays. Moondream remains Prime's name for small, efficient multimodal models.
- Moondream Cloud customers will get credits on Prime's platform in the next few days, for Moondream models and Prime's other training and inference services.
Prime did not disclose the price of the deal.
