OpenAI found a hidden recording device in one of its offices. The company says it used its own AI models to work out what the device was and where it came from, and traced it to one of its employees, who had planted it a few days earlier. The employee was fired and the case went to the FBI, which has made an arrest.

What OpenAI says
- The device was "a sophisticated recording device" hidden inside one of its offices.
- Its models helped identify the device and the employee who planted it.
- OpenAI referred the matter to the FBI; agents and prosecutors made an arrest, and the investigation is ongoing.
- So far OpenAI has "no indications" that the person accessed or took model weights, source code or customer data.
What the reports add
- The device was found on September 30, hidden in an executive conference room and plugged into the USB port of a TV.
- According to the complaint, a second, similar device was found in a bag left in another OpenAI room on October 5.
- The engineer was arrested and appeared in federal court in Northern California. He is charged with trying to intercept oral communications; he has not been convicted. The charge carries up to five years in prison.
Why it matters
AI labs hold some of the most valuable secrets in tech: model weights, training methods, plans. OpenAI calls this case an example of AI helping with security, from insider threats to attacks by other countries.
