Peter Thiel-backed startup Nucleus Genomics launched an AI-powered polygenic screening platform for in vitro fertilization (IVF) under the tagline "Have your best baby," offering parents predictive scores for cognitive traits, disease liabilities, and physical characteristics.

The platform computes polygenic risk scores across millions of genetic variants extracted from biopsied embryos, enabling prospective parents to rank candidates prior to clinical implantation.
What it is
- Polygenic trait ranking. Following standard IVF procedures, the algorithms evaluate genome-wide sequencing data to generate relative predictions for cognitive ability, disease susceptibility, height, and complex hereditary markers.
- Projected IQ variance. Nucleus claims a statistical spread of up to 14.3 IQ points between the highest- and lowest-ranked embryo within a typical batch of ten candidates. The company notes this figure derives from statistical modeling rather than clinically validated longitudinal outcomes.
- No gene editing. The platform does not alter embryonic DNA via CRISPR or gene therapy; it functions exclusively as a pre-implantation computational screening tool.
- Scientific and regulatory pushback. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) stated that polygenic embryo screening is not yet validated for routine clinical practice. Additionally, advertising watchdog National Advertising Division (NAD) formally recommended Nucleus modify promotional claims regarding selecting for intelligence.
