Anthropic released an update to its Claude Code command-line interface that eliminates excessive token consumption from background subagents by delegating periodic status reporting to Claude Haiku 5.5.
Prior to the fix, developer feedback indicated that automated background subagents running linter passes, test suites, and git operations accounted for up to 16% of session token expenditure solely through repetitive status polling.
What it is
- Full-context re-read bottleneck. Previously, background subagents refreshed operational status every 30 seconds. On each poll, the primary reasoning model re-read the entire accumulated conversation transcript.
- Haiku 5.5 delegation. Under the new architecture, status updates are compiled into compact summary notes processed by the lightweight Haiku 5.5 model without reloading full conversation histories.
- 99% status cost reduction. Anthropic reports that the cost of generating an individual status update fell by approximately 99%, resulting in an overall ~5% token savings across multi-agent sessions.
- Session capacity boost. The efficiency improvement translates to an effective 6% increase in usable developer prompt volume within equivalent token allocations.
- CLI release requirements. The optimization is currently limited to the terminal CLI and is bundled in Claude Code version 2.1.316 and above; the desktop application is unaffected.
