Anthropic donated the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation to turn the open workflow specification into a vendor-neutral industry standard. Over 70 platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, and VS Code, currently implement the format.
The transfer follows Anthropic's earlier contribution of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to the Linux Foundation. While MCP standardizes how AI models call tools and fetch external data, Agent Skills provides a folder-based format containing markdown instructions and scripts that teach agents procedural knowledge.
Alongside the specification handover, four other major AI developments landed today:
- MiniMax-M3.1-Flash: MiniMax published open model weights for its 428-billion parameter mixture-of-experts model on Hugging Face, activating 23 billion parameters per token with a 1-million-token context window.
- OpenAI and Google Cloud: Google Cloud made OpenAI frontier models, including GPT-6 models and Codex workflows, purchasable through Google Cloud Marketplace and Vertex AI Model Garden.
- Meta Class C shares: Meta announced a new class of non-voting Class C shares effective January 19, 2027, creating an equity instrument to finance tens of billions in AI infrastructure without diluting CEO voting control.
- Amazon Polly updates: AWS added 14 new synthetic voices across nine locales, introducing Finnish and Hindi generative voices for the first time.
What it is
- Open governance. Anthropic transferred ownership of the Agent Skills specification, the
agentskills.iodomain, and its repository to the Linux Foundation AAIF. - Cross-platform adoption. The standard allows developers to define repeatable agent skills in portable folders containing a
SKILL.mdfile, used across Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and ChatGPT. - MiniMax open weights. The MiniMax-M3.1-Flash release comprises 48 weight shards totaling 252 GB, operating with sparse attention and a dedicated DSpark speculative-decoding head.
- Cloud marketplace distribution. Enterprise customers can draw down committed Google Cloud spend to run OpenAI models and Codex CLI integrations within Google Cloud perimeter controls.
- Capital restructuring. Meta issued one Class C non-voting share for each existing share to help fund projected 2026 capital expenditures of $135 billion to $145 billion.
