Users and developers are turning their smart TVs "dumb" again by using AI coding agents to rip out vendor bloatware, tracking services, and intrusive ads. Two open-source projects, dumbtv and cleanyourtv, allow users to connect tools like Claude Code directly to Android and Google TVs over ADB.

The utilities use automated ADB commands guided by AI agents to safely uninstall background telemetry daemons, disable default promotional launchers, and install clean, open-source alternatives. One developer reported removing 25 pre-installed manufacturer apps from a television set in a single afternoon.
What it is
- Automated debloating. dumbtv and cleanyourtv connect AI agents to TV firmware via ADB debugging interfaces.
- Privacy and performance. The tools strip manufacturer telemetry, ad feeds, and background video recommendation services that slow down budget hardware.
- Alternative interfaces. Once the stock launcher is deactivated, the agents configure lightweight open-source launchers such as minimal TV home screens.
- Hardware risks. Because the agents manipulate low-level system packages, community testers caution that improper package removal can soft-brick television firmware.
