Pick GitHub Copilot if you want the cheapest paid plan, autocomplete in almost any IDE, and tight GitHub integration. Pick Cursor if you want an AI-first code editor with fast Tab autocomplete and you like Grok models, or you are happy to pay API prices for Claude and GPT. Pick Claude Code if you want an agent that does multi-step work across your whole project from the terminal, your editor or the web, with Anthropic's Claude models included in the plan. All three are good. The right one depends on how you work and what you already pay for. Prices below are as of October 2026 and come from each vendor's own pages.
What is the difference between Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot?
They started from different places, and it still shows.
- Claude Code is Anthropic's "agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools." It began in the terminal. It now also runs in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, a desktop app and the browser.
- Cursor calls itself "the AI editor and coding agent." It is a code editor you install, with an agent, Tab autocomplete, cloud agents and a CLI.
- GitHub Copilot is "an AI assistant that helps you write, understand, and ship software." It plugs into many IDEs and into GitHub itself, from pull requests to a cloud agent.

How much do Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot cost?
Prices change often. These are from the official pricing pages as of October 2026, in US dollars, before tax.
Claude Code is included in Claude's paid plans. The free Claude plan does not include it.
| Claude plan | Price | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No Claude Code |
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month billed yearly ($200 up front) | Base level |
| Max 5x | $100/month | 5 times Pro per session |
| Max 20x | $200/month | 20 times Pro per session |
| Team, Standard seat | $25/seat monthly, $20 yearly | More than Pro |
| Team, Premium seat | $125/seat monthly, $100 yearly | 5 times a standard seat |
| Enterprise | $20/seat/month billed yearly, 20 seat minimum, plus usage at API rates | Scales with model and task |
Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly limits. Claude Code shares the same limits as Claude chat.
Cursor changed its plans. New customers now buy Cursor through The X Subscription, which shares one usage pool across Cursor and Grok products.
| Cursor plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited Agent, Chat and Tab with Cursor models |
| Plus | $8/month | Shared usage pool, Grok models only |
| Premium | $30/month | 4x Plus usage, cloud agents, Bugbot code reviews, third-party models at API list price |
| Super | $100/month | 15x Plus usage, priority model access at peak times |
| Ultra | $200/month | 50x Plus usage, earliest access to products and models |
| Teams | $30, $100 or $200 per seat/month | Pooled usage, central billing, SSO |
| Enterprise | Custom | SCIM, audit logs, spend controls |
The usage pool refreshes weekly. One big detail: on the new plans, Claude and GPT models are not part of the pool. On Premium and above they bill at API list price from prepaid credit. The old Pro ($20), Pro+ ($60) and Ultra ($200) plans are no longer sold to new customers, though existing subscribers keep them until they switch or cancel.
GitHub Copilot now bills model use in GitHub AI Credits. One credit equals $0.01.
| Copilot plan | Price | Included AI credits |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests per month |
| Student | Free for verified students | |
| Pro | $10/month | 1,500 (1,000 base + 500 flex) |
| Pro+ | $39/month | 7,000 (3,900 base + 3,100 flex) |
| Max | $100/month | 20,000 (10,000 base + 10,000 flex) |
| Business | $19/seat/month | 1,900 per user |
| Enterprise | $39/seat/month | 3,900 per user |
On paid plans, code completions and next edit suggestions do not use credits and stay unlimited. Chat and agent work do use credits. Verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects may get Copilot Pro for free.

Which is best for autocomplete while I type?
Cursor and Copilot. Cursor Tab "suggests code as you type, based on your recent edits, surrounding code, and linter errors." Copilot gives unlimited code completions and next edit suggestions on every paid plan, and 2,000 completions a month on Free.
Claude Code is not built around inline autocomplete. You give it a task and it does the work. Many developers pair it with an editor that has autocomplete. The Claude Code VS Code extension even installs in Cursor.
Which is best for big, multi-step tasks?
This is where Claude Code is strongest. Its whole design is the agent loop: read the code, plan, edit many files, run tests, fix, repeat. It adds tools that help on long jobs:
- Subagents that take on side tasks in their own context
- Hooks that run your scripts at fixed points, such as formatting after every edit
- Skills that package repeatable workflows as
/commands - Plan mode to agree on an approach before any code changes
Cursor's Agent and Copilot's agent mode also handle multi-file work, and both offer cloud agents that run in the background. If most of your day is in an editor and you want the agent to be one feature among many, Cursor or Copilot may feel more natural.
Which works with my IDE?
Copilot covers the most editors. GitHub's feature matrix lists VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Eclipse and Xcode with agent mode, completions and chat. NeoVim gets code completion.
Claude Code runs in any terminal, plus a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin, a desktop app and the web. Because the CLI is a terminal app, it works next to any editor, including Vim or Emacs.
Cursor is its own editor. You switch your editor to Cursor, or use the Cursor CLI in a terminal.
Which one gives me the best models?
It depends on which models you want.
- Claude Code runs Anthropic's Claude models, such as Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, and the usage is included in your plan. You can also use it through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry.
- Cursor's plan pool covers Cursor models (Grok and Composer). Claude and GPT cost extra at API list price on Premium and above. Plus has Grok models only.
- Copilot offers a selection of models on Pro, premium models on Pro+ and up, and charges AI credits per use. Pro+ and Max can also hand tasks to third-party agents, including Claude and OpenAI Codex (in preview).
If Claude is the model you want most, Claude Code is the most direct way to pay for it. If you mainly want Grok, Cursor is.
Can I use more than one?
Yes, and many people do. Some practical mixes:
- Copilot for autocomplete, Claude Code for big tasks. Copilot Pro at $10 plus Claude Pro at $20.
- Cursor as editor, Claude Code inside it. Install the Claude Code extension in Cursor.
- Switching tools. Claude Code's
/initreads Cursor rules in.cursor/rules/or.cursorrulesand Copilot rules in.github/copilot-instructions.md, and folds them into a newCLAUDE.md. There is also an/import cursorcommand. All three tools can read anAGENTS.mdfile, so one shared file can serve your whole team.
So which one should I use?
| If you... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Want the lowest paid price and work in Visual Studio, Xcode or Eclipse | GitHub Copilot |
| Live on GitHub and want an agent that opens pull requests | GitHub Copilot |
| Want an all-in-one AI editor with strong autocomplete | Cursor |
| Mainly want Grok models in your editor | Cursor |
| Want an agent that handles long, multi-file tasks | Claude Code |

There is no single winner. Copilot is the easy, affordable default. Cursor is the editor-first choice. Claude Code is the agent-first choice. Try the free tier or cheapest plan of the one that matches your style for a week, on a real project, before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Code better than Cursor? For long, multi-step agent work, Claude Code has the edge in design: the agent is the whole product, with subagents, hooks and skills built around it. For inline autocomplete and an AI-first editor, Cursor is stronger. They also work together: Claude Code's VS Code extension installs in Cursor.
Is GitHub Copilot still cheaper? Yes, at the entry level. Copilot Pro is $10/month with unlimited completions. Claude Pro is $20/month. Cursor Plus is $8/month but covers Grok models only, and Premium is $30/month. Prices as of October 2026.
Can I use Claude models in Cursor or Copilot? In Cursor, Claude bills at API list price from prepaid credit on Premium and above. In Copilot, Pro+ and Max can delegate tasks to Claude as a third-party agent, and model use draws AI credits.
Does Claude Code have a free plan? No. It needs a paid Claude plan or a Console (API) account. Cursor and Copilot both have free tiers.
Which tool is best for beginners? Copilot is the gentlest start because it fits into the editor you already use. If you want to learn agent-style coding, Claude Code is worth it. Our beginner's guide to installing Claude Code gets you running in minutes.
Can I keep one instructions file for all three?
Mostly, yes. Claude Code, Cursor and Copilot can each read AGENTS.md. See our CLAUDE.md explainer for how Claude Code decides which file to load.
