The Claude Certified Architect: Foundations exam (code CCAR-F) is Anthropic's proctored test for people who build production systems with Claude. It has 60 multiple-choice and multiple-response items, a 120-minute time limit, and a passing scaled score of 720 out of 1,000. The fee is $125 USD and the credential lasts 12 months. It covers five domains: agentic architecture, tool design and MCP, Claude Code, prompt engineering and structured output, and context management. The best way to prepare is to build things with the Claude Agent SDK, Claude Code and MCP, then practise scenario questions.
Every fact below comes from Anthropic's official exam guide (version 1.0, effective July 2026) and Anthropic's own certification pages. Anthropic says the guide may change without notice, so check it before you book.
What is the Claude Certified Architect exam?
It is one of four role-based Claude certifications. Anthropic describes the Architect: Foundations credential as being for solution architects who design and build agent systems with Claude. Anthropic says each certification path starts at a Foundations level and moves up to a Professional level.
The exam tests judgment, not memory. Anthropic's guide says it checks whether you can make informed decisions about tradeoffs when building real solutions with Claude. It covers four technologies:
- Claude Code
- The Claude Agent SDK
- The Claude API
- Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Questions sit inside realistic scenarios taken from customer use cases. Examples include customer support agents, multi-agent research pipelines, Claude Code in CI/CD, and data extraction from documents.

What topics are on the Claude Architect exam?
The blueprint has five domains. Weights are the approximate share of scored items.
| Domain | Weight | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Agentic Architecture and Orchestration | 27% | Agentic loops, coordinator and subagent patterns, hooks, task decomposition, sessions |
| 2. Tool Design and MCP Integration | 18% | Tool descriptions, structured errors, tool distribution, MCP config, built-in tools |
| 3. Claude Code Configuration and Workflows | 20% | CLAUDE.md hierarchy, rules, slash commands, skills, plan mode, CI/CD |
| 4. Prompt Engineering and Structured Output | 20% | Explicit criteria, few-shot examples, tool use with JSON schemas, validation loops, batches |
| 5. Context Management and Reliability | 15% | Long context, escalation, error propagation, human review, provenance |
Domain 1 is the biggest single block. Domains 3 and 4 together make up 40%.
Domain 1: agentic architecture (27%)
You need to know how an agentic loop works. The loop keeps going while stop_reason is "tool_use" and stops on "end_turn". The guide calls out bad habits, like using iteration caps as the main stop signal.
It also covers multi-agent design. Subagents do not inherit the coordinator's history, so you must pass context into their prompts. Hooks are tested as the way to enforce rules that must always hold, such as blocking a refund over a threshold.
Domain 2: tool design and MCP (18%)
Tool descriptions are how Claude picks a tool. Vague or overlapping descriptions cause wrong picks. Expect questions on structured error responses, the MCP isError flag, and giving each agent only the tools it needs. You also need to know where MCP servers are configured: project .mcp.json for shared tools and ~/.claude.json for personal ones.
Domain 3: Claude Code (20%)
This covers the CLAUDE.md hierarchy (user, project, directory), .claude/rules/ files with paths glob patterns, project slash commands, and skills with frontmatter like context: fork and allowed-tools. It also tests when to use plan mode and how to run Claude Code in CI with the -p flag.
Domain 4: prompts and structured output (20%)
Expect few-shot examples, explicit review criteria, and tool use with JSON schemas. You should know tool_choice options: "auto", "any", and forcing a named tool. The Message Batches API is in scope too. It saves 50% on cost but can take up to 24 hours, so it suits overnight jobs, not blocking checks.
Domain 5: context and reliability (15%)
This covers keeping key facts safe across long sessions, the "lost in the middle" effect, when to escalate to a human, how subagents should report errors, and how to keep source attribution through synthesis.
What is NOT on the exam?
The guide lists out-of-scope topics. You can skip deep study of these:
- Fine-tuning or training models
- API authentication, billing, rate limits and pricing maths
- Computer use and vision
- Streaming and server-sent events
- Hosting or deploying MCP servers
- Embeddings and vector databases
- Prompt caching details (you only need to know it exists)
- Tokenization specifics and model benchmarks
Who can take the Claude Certified Architect exam?
Anthropic's eligibility page says the exams are open to people who work at organizations in the Claude Partner Network. You sign in with a company email on a domain listed in your organization's partner record. A personal email will not work.
Other official conditions:
- You must be 18 or older.
- You need a valid, government-issued photo ID that matches your registration name.
- If your organization is not a partner, you cannot register for a certification exam.
Partner Network membership is free for firms, according to Anthropic. Firms apply at claude.com/partners. If you are not at a partner, you can still take public courses on Claude Academy. Those give a certificate of completion, which is not the same as a certification.
On experience, the guide says the typical candidate has 6+ months of hands-on work with the Claude API, Agent SDK, Claude Code and MCP. That is a guide, not a hard requirement.
How to register for the Claude Architect exam
Registration runs through the Anthropic Partner Academy and Pearson VUE. The official steps are:
- Open the exam's certification page on the Anthropic Partner Academy.
- Download the exam guide. Read the Certification Terms and Conditions and the Exam Policy.
- Register and pay. The checkout price reflects any partner tier discount.
- Follow the email to create a Pearson VUE account and schedule.
- Pick online proctoring or a Pearson test center.
You can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before your slot. Later changes forfeit the fee. Anthropic also says tiered partners get discounted rates on a first exam attempt, but it does not publish the discount amount.

How to prepare for the Claude Certified Architect exam
Anthropic's guide recommends hands-on practice over reading. Here is a simple plan built on its advice.
1. Build an agent with the Claude Agent SDK. Write a full agentic loop with tool calls, error handling and sessions. Spawn subagents and pass context to them on purpose.
2. Configure Claude Code for a real project. Set up a project CLAUDE.md, add path-scoped rules in .claude/rules/, write a skill with context: fork and allowed-tools, and connect one MCP server.
3. Design and test MCP tools. Write descriptions that separate similar tools. Return structured errors with a category and a retryable flag. Test with vague user requests.
4. Build an extraction pipeline. Use tool use with a JSON schema, add a validation and retry loop, use nullable fields, and try the Message Batches API.
5. Practise prompt techniques. Write few-shot examples for edge cases. Define explicit review criteria. Split big code reviews into per-file passes plus a cross-file pass.
6. Study context and escalation patterns. Practise pulling facts out of long tool output, using scratchpad files, and deciding when to hand off to a human.
7. Do scenario questions. The guide includes 12 sample questions. After those, try our 10 practice questions for the Claude Architect exam.
Anthropic's Partner Academy also lists free prep courses for this exam. These include Building with the Claude API, Claude Code in Action, and Introduction to Model Context Protocol.
A study tip that matches the question style
Most sample answers in the guide follow one pattern. They pick the fix that targets the root cause with the least added machinery. Deterministic hooks beat prompt rules when money or compliance is at stake. Better tool descriptions beat routing layers. Explicit criteria beat "be conservative". When two answers look right, ask which one fixes the actual cause.
